Product Review: Starlooks’ Starbox December 2013 Edition!

20140117-160850.jpg

Hi Lovelies,

A few weeks ago I was fortunate enough to receive the very last Starbox of 2013! I sincerely apologize for taking so long to post this review, but I’ve been having significant upper GI symptoms which is rather unusual for me. Back in October we received a sneak peak saying that we’d be receiving a 15 shade Pro Palette in our boxes! Last year I received a 15 shade palette in what is now called the Birthday palette, but was first introduced as a custom made palette for Starbox subscribers. Once again this year, I was told we’d receive another custom made palette.

20140117-160816.jpg

I have to be honest in saying that I don’t use last year’s palette very much because of how bright the various shades are. While those shades are beautiful, they don’t fit in my day to day routine as I tend to stick to nudes or neutrals. Although I do use the nude quad we received last November. Since this year’s November box had several bright shades, I had hoped that the big mega palette would be nudes or neutrals. And I was by no means disappointed!

20140117-160822.jpg

I absolutely LOVE this Pro Palette!! Every single shade is absolutely gorgeous! Starlooks has certainly outdone themselves this year with this easily wearable on a day to day basis palette. Once again this is a custom palette exclusively just for Starbox subscribers. Although I believe it is still possible to order December’s Starbox for just a couple dollars more than originally. Even the name of this palette, New Year’s Eve 2014, is a reason to celebrate. If you look at the options for pre-made 15 shade palettes, you’ll see a New Year’s Eve one with similar nude/neutral shades. The regular retail price of this mega palette is $99, but only $17.68 (including shipping) for Starbox subscribers or $21.68 (including shipping) for a single December box! If you love wearing nudes/neutrals as much as I do, t hen this is a palette to get at about a fifth of what it would cost normally!

20140117-160828.jpg

Onto to the box itself, included in the typical white padded mailer was a white box with green elastic bow (I do miss the bow tied with ribbon, but completely understand that, that kind of detail would be difficult to maintain with growing service). Upon opening the box, I saw two pieces of paper (I miss the card stock from just a couple months ago), one of which was the typical introduction to this month’s box (seen first photo for the front of the card) and the second mentioned a new perk for loyal subscribers!

20140117-160854.jpg

I really like that both the November and December boxes had pictures of an eye look that can be done with the included items. Although I found November’s a bit more useful as it showed pictorially HOW to apply the shades to get the look the model was wearing. I very much hope this becomes a routine feature! I’d LOVE to see a bunch more pictorial tutorials for looks using this December 2013 box! I was able to recreate the look from November on my first try and received many complements. I had a bit more trouble with the December look as there are so many more shades in the palette to choose from.

20140117-163642.jpg

Since there is only one “item”, I’ll go through the shades one by one starting with the first row, going left to right.

20140117-160915.jpg

first row (left to right)
1. silver (shimmer)
2. purple-magenta (matte)
3. dark green (shimmer)
4. cool toned dark brown (matte)
5. black (matte)

20140117-160920.jpg

second row (left to right)
6. taupe with duo chrome with a magenta sheen (shimmer)
7. pearlized white (shimmer)
8. warm toned medium dark brown (matte)
9. warm toned medium brown with purple duo chrome (sparkle)
10. like a matte black base with purple duo chrome (sparkle)

20140117-160930.jpg

third row (left to right)
11. beige (matte) [nearly my skin tone so very hard to see]
12. light cream with an ever so slightly pearlized sheen (matte)
13. bronze-y medium brown (shimmer)
14. olive green (shimmer)
15. medium brown with gold (sparkle)

Definitions:
shimmer shadows have very fine micro-glitter
matte shades have no shimmer or glitter
sparkle shades are matte bases with glitter or micro-glitter

I’ve only just started to play around with this awesome palette. The options with this are truly unlimited! Starlooks definitely hit this one out of the park with this palette that contains mostly easily wearable colors for use on a daily basis along with a couple pops of color here and there. The purple-magenta matte shade doesn’t show up very well all by itself, it needs to be applied over eye shadow primer or with a wet brush. I’ve included swatches of all the shades swatched in just that fashion, over primer and with a wet brush. I’ve also taken the photos with different light filters on my cell phone in hopes of giving you the best possible idea of these colors! And all of these shadows can also do double duty as eyeliner just by using a wet angled brush!

TIP: I like to also add a touch of dry shadow (of the the same or different shade) on top for an extra pop.

You too can receive awesome full size cosmetic products from Starlooks’ for only $17.68 a month (includes shipping)! If you do decide to subscribe, please consider using my referral link by clicking HERE, if you do then I’ll receive a special box which I’ll then review on my blog.

20140117-160900.jpg

The second card included with this box states that beginning with December, continuous subscribers will automatically receive an exclusive gift (valued at $35) EVERY 3 months!! So if you received a December box, then you (and I) will receive a special gift in February! If you joined before January 10th then you’ll receive your first reward in March, and if you are reading this and join before February 10th then you’ll receive yours in April! Also Starlooks’ Starbox is the ONLY subscription service out there that sends subscribers a FREE BONUS box during their Birthday month as a special Birthday Box!! Last year I received a red lipstick with coordinating red lipliner and a black eyeliner in my Birthday Box.

20140117-160905.jpg

Did you receive December’s box? If so what did you think of it?
How were your holidays? Did you do anything special or fun? I’d love to hear from you!
Wishing you and yours a very happy and healthy 2014!

Product Review: Starlooks’ Starbox November 2013 Edition

Product Review: Starlooks’ Starbox November 2013 Edition

20131207-205402.jpg

Recently I was fortunate enough to be sent Starlooks’ November Starbox. For those who’ve followed my blog for awhile, you’ll know that I LOVE Starlooks! I first reviewed their Starbox back in June of 2012 which incidentally was their launch. This is a cosmetics company that I have been lucky enough to watch blossom and grow. Both Starlooks cosmetics on their own and Starlooks’ Starbox have been included in my first (annual) Jaclyn’s Musings Holiday Gift Guide!

20131207-205514.jpg

Now onto the box. The theme for this month’s box was Monaco. Near the beginning of each month Starlooks releases a new looksbook which has all of the products included in the look. Some months its relatively easy to guess items that may be included and other months not quite so much. This month was awesome in that in addition to the typical photoshoot photography, we were also shown through a series of photos how to do a particular eyeshadow look. I guessed that we were likely to be receiving all or most of the shades used and thought that might be through a 5 shade eyeshadow palette. Well, my guess was correct and we were introduced to a brand new 5 shade eyeshadow palette called Monaco.

20131207-205521.jpg

Severals months ago Starlooks revamped their packaging switching from black boxes to white ones with prominent lettering that really makes a statement. This months box was all white with a silver Starlooks logo tied with a silver elastic cord.

20131207-213337.jpg

Included in this months box was the 5 shade eyeshadow palette, slanted liner brush #824 and an infinity pot liner. As a bonus there was a small pencil sharpener with Starlooks’ logo on it. I just wish that the sharpener had a plastic cover so that it isn’t necessary to hold it over a waste bin.

20131207-213348.jpg

The 5 pan eyeshadow palette included the follow shades (from left to right):

a matte white -a sheer white that is easily built up to more opaque and is perfect both as a base and as a highlighter

a shimmery taupe – a beautiful medium taupe with golden/bronze shimmer that is very pigmented

a matte navy blue – a highly pigmented deep navy blue that is buttery and soft in texture

a matte red – a pigmented bright red that is smooth and soft in texture making it easy to apply sheer or more opaque.

a shimmery gold – a beautifully rich gold with more pronounced glitter than the shimmery taupe, perfect alone or layered over another shade.

20131207-205531.jpg

I was very impressed that the mattes were so easy to work with as mattes have a tendency to be on the dry side making them harder to work with than shimmers. The look shown on the looksbook and front of the information card included in this box is very easy to self apply. I would never have thought to pair bright red with deep navy blue mattes to create a cohesive look! The retail value for this super palette is $41!

No eye look is complete without eyeliner and also included in this box were the perfect tool and gel liner to get the job done. I love Starlooks’ makeup brushes. I have the 15 piece set, which I’ll be posting a review of soon, and that makes applying any look so much easier. BUT a girl can never have too many brushes so I was quite happy to see one included this month.

20131207-213342.jpg

The Slanted Liner #824 brush is a perfect staple for effortlessly lining your eyes whether you like thick or thin eyeliner looks. This brush coupled with the included gel liner is a fabulous way to finish any bold eye look. The retail value of this fabulous brush is $18.

20131207-213353.jpg

Before trying the included Infinity Pot Liner in Orion I did not know what I was missing! Orion is the most deep blue-green liner I’ve ever seen. On days when I’m in more of a hurry I’ve skipped applying eyeshadow and just apply color liner. I’ve been reaching more and more for this one than any of the others I own since I received this a couple weeks ago! This is definitely my most favorite item in this box although I didn’t dislike anything. The retail value for this amazing gel liner is $13. Which brings the the total value of this box an incredible $73! All ONLY for the cost of $15 (+ $2.68 shipping)!!

20131207-205929.jpg

I can hardly wait for the December Starbox as we’ve been told that it’ll contain 15 pan custom selection of eyeshadows that regularly retails for $99! All I’ve been told that the colors are quite different than last years were. If you like to see what some of the other 15 pan eyeshadow palettes look like you can do that by clicking HERE.

20131207-205443.jpg

And this amazing December box could be yours IF you sign up for Starlooks’ Starbox BY Tuesday, December 10th! If you ONLY want to order this one box for yourself or a gift you can use the code ILOVESTARLOOKS to get it for $19 (+ about $2.68 in shipping). If you’d like to purchase a 3 or 6 month (gift) subscription you can do that at a slight discount by using the same code. These options only apply to U.S. orders. If you’d like to sign yourself or someone else up for a continous subscription you can do what regardless of where you live (although if you live outside of the U.S. you need to call the office directly) for only $15 (+$2.68 shipping) a month. To subscribe just click HERE (this is a referral link). If you would please use my referral link, I will receive a special bonus Starbox filled with lip and/or eye items. I would greatly appreciate it if you would please use my link, it will NOT change anything for you at all.

20131207-205437.jpg

From now until December 15th you can use the code ILOVESTARLOOKS for a whopping 40% EVERYTHING on Starlooks.com!

20131207-205431.jpg

Do you subscribe to Starlooks’ Starbox or any other subscription box? I’d love to hear what you thought of this and/or other boxes you’ve received!

Wishing you and yours a very happy and healthy holiday season!

Product Review: Starlooks’ Starbox October 2013 Edition!

Product Review: Starlooks’ Starbox October 2013 Edition!

20131110-235933.jpg

20131111-002947.jpg

I recently had the opportunity to review the October edition of the Starlooks’ Starbox. While I wasn’t all that excited about the September box, I was quite please upon opening up this box! As usual, Starlooks’ Starbox is beautifully presented. The copper metallic elastic matched the glossy black box.

20131111-002942.jpg

Upon opening the lovely box of goodies, I first saw that there were a few more cards included than usual. One card was for $50 off a pair of classes from (insert name of site here). They advertise that for $199 the customer chooses three pairs of frames to try on in the comfort of one’s own home and then mails them all back selecting one pair that will have their prescription lenses fitted. While I really like the concept and am due for a new pair of glasses, I still feel that this is too much money out of pocket for me especially when I couldn’t find any place on the site in which information about one’s insurance can be entered for prior billing.

20131111-002957.jpg

The next card mentioned a sneak peek of the products that will be included in the December box, which I will divulge later in my post! And of course the usual card with photos from the LooksBook and information about all the included products. Earlier in the month on the Starlooks facebook page, we were told that the October box included an item we hadn’t seen in a while which immediately caused followers to speculate what that might be. I too had a few guesses as to what this “long-lost” item could be, but I kept my ideas to myself.

20131111-003003.jpg

The first item included was a Tendergloss lipstick in the shade, Puzzy. Tenderglosses are like a combination of a lip gloss and a lipstick. This particular shade reminds me quite a bit of the essentially clear gloss from September. In the tube this looks like a very pale light pink, but both swatched and on my lips it has no color other than a glistening sheen. In the swatch below (on the left side of the gem pencil swatch), it is very subtle.

This would be perfect for someone who is just beginning to gain confidence in applying makeup along with those who do not like bright/bold lip colors and those who dress conservatively for work. Since I first started to renew my interest in cosmetics, I’ve discovered that not only do I absolutely LOVE brighter and bolder lip shades, but that I LOVE wearing red lipsticks! So to receive another lip item with very little color, I’m not that excited. However, I DO recommend the Tenderglosses as a great alternative to a ‘traditional’ lipstick, yet is still applied with the ease of a lipstick. This has a retail value of $13.

20131110-235945.jpg

The second item in the box was a gem eye liner. Previously these were referred to as diamondline pencils and in my view of the January 2013 box (click HERE) and back in their very first box, back in June of 2012 (click HERE). These are by far the creamiest pencils I’ve ever used! Besides the insane creaminess, these gem pencils (as far as I know) all have silver (micro) glitter included. This time Mirage was included which has a base of silver also with silver glitter. I’ve included swatches of all 3 of the gem pencils that I own. These sparkling pencils can be used alone, layered (ex. over a darker liner shade), or even smudged. There are so many different looks that can be done with a liner such as this! The retail value is $14.

20131111-000004.jpg

And last, but not least, this is MY FAVORITE item included in this box! I had hoped we’d be receiving one of these sooner or later and so glad it came in this box!! This is also the item teased about as a spoiler as an item that we hadn’t seem in a while. So without further ado here the third item is none other than a 3 shade plush palette! This very hefty palette contains quite a bit of product (by weight)! We received the shade 3B1 of two blush palettes I’d had my eye on with the other being the shade 3B3. I absolutely LOVE this palette! I’ve been using it almost daily since I received it. While that bright pink shade (far left) looks intimidating, it actually looks fabulous on and only needs a light hand to add that perfect flush. For me, the middle shade also doubles as s highlighter. And the more mauve-esque shade (far right) working great on the apples of the cheeks for a lovely flush and it also works to do some contouring. So this is truly a multi-tasking product. This has a retail value of $46

The total retail value of this box is a whopping $73! That is over 4 times the cost of the box! And Starlooks ONLY ever includes FULL sized products from their ever expanding line. If you like makeup and surprises, then this is the box for you! For just $15 a month (plus approximately $2.68 shipping) you too can enjoy monthly treats!

SPOILER ALERT: If you’ve been thinking out joining, but been on the fence then I have a couple spoilers for you. First off I’ve been told that the value of the upcoming November box is at least $75! And the card included in the box states that (once again) 15 shade pro eye shadow palette which typically retails for $99 will be in the December box! A little birdie told me that this 15 shade shadow palette will NOT be one of the ones for sale on the site, but a custom one like last years was. Starlooks’ Starbox makes a fabulous gift to any beauty lover from novice through pro makeup artist!

20131111-000326.jpg

Starlooks’ recently started a referral program. For EVERY NEW subscription placed using ones referral link means a bonus box of either lip, eye, or both items as soon as all boxes are sent out for that month, for up to 3 bonus boxes per month!

20131111-000334.jpg

If you are thinking of subscribing to Starbox whether for yourself or a gift for someone else, I would greatly appreciate it if you could PLEASE use my referral link which you can find through the button on the far right hand side, or by clicking HERE! This will help me to be to continue to do reviews on Starlooks products! If you EVER have ANY questions about Starlooks, Starbox, or something on their website or social media pages, don’t hesitate to call or email them as Starlooks’ customer service is excellent! I don’t believe I have ever heard a negative comment based on their customer service.

The cutoff date for subscribing to Starlooks’ Starbox is now the 10th of the month! They are also already taking pre-orders for December box! Don’t forget to check out Starlooks’ social media pages!

20131111-002936.jpg

What do you think about the contents on this box? Are these items ones you would use? Do you receive Starlooks’ Starbox or interested in joining? I’d LOVE to hear what you think!

Review: Starlooks’ Starbox October 2012

Review: Starlook’s October Starbox
Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

Have you heard of Starlooks’ Starbox? If you haven’t and love cosmetics you might want to consider subscribing! This is the ONLY subscription service that contains a min. of 3-4 FULL size cosmetic products for only $15 (+$1.98 shipping)! At the bottom of my review you’ll find sneak peak information about their special December box!

I know I am behind and will have my review of the September box up this week. But I wanted to get this review up as quickly as possible. Since Starlooks is located not too far from where I live, I tend to receive items from them very quickly. I have to say that this is my favorite of any of the services I have seen or have the opportunity to receive. So without further ado, I’ll get started.

With Halloween quickly coming up, Starlooks choose to go with a fun Halloween theme and nicknamed each product with the old adage “Hear No Evil, See No Evil, Speak No Evil”. The first item is the “See No Evil” is is an eyeliner pencil in the shade “Gold Dust”. Previously we’d received one of their Diamondline pencils (Myth) which are all metallic shades and so very smooth and easy to apply. This one while being a gold coloring wasn’t as sharp a metallic shade or as smooth upon application as the Diamondline. Typically I shy away from ‘traditional’ eyeliner pencils as I find that most of them are too dry and tug when trying to line my eyes.

I found that I was quite surprised when I tried the Diamondline that was the creamiest pencil I had ever tried. This one I found didn’t apply as smoothly. It is still better than most pencils, but drier than the Diamondline. The shade itself is very pretty and I look forward to playing around and coming up with looks using this gold liner as I didn’t have anything close in my stash thus far.

The second item while not being something you’d ‘hear’ or wear on your ears is actually another eye product (I love eye makeup) as is the “Hear No Evil” item. This is actually the first product of its kind that I own and is a gorgeous shade of purple eye shadow luster pigment. There were two options for this one, Posh or Peddle, yet both were a shade of purple. I tried looking up both shades and found that the color resolution for the one I did receive wasn’t even close to what it looks like in person.

I ended up receiving the shade Posh and it is an incredibly vibrant and fairly bright purple. While purple is my one of my most favorite colors (with teal/turquoise being the other), I have only begun to try to incorporate it into my (eye) makeup. I actually only one one purple eyeshadow as part of a Wet N Wild trio that I bought last spring in a set with a lip gloss, blush, and quick drying teal nail polish (the reason I bought it as it was the same price as buying the polish by itself, I’ll post a review of this set soon). I can’t wait to play around with this gorgeous shimmery shade.

Next is the “Speak No Evil” item and if you hadn’t guessed, it is for the lips! This is a very bright rich blood red which the card says has a ‘hint of orange shimmer’. The orange shimmer shows itself better in certain light than in others. The formula is very cream, smooth, and unlike other lipsticks, isn’t too drying. I definitely like this shade much better than the more orange-y one sent during the summer. While I tend to gravitate more towards wine, pinkish-red, or pinkish-nude shades this one does look pretty good on. Though I would probably not wear bright eye makeup with such a vibrant lip shade.

And Starlooks more often than not includes extras in addition to the mystic quartz crystal included which each box. This time I received one large and one smaller quartz crystal which was nice since the one last month was teeny tiny.

Last, but not least on the very bottom is a pair of temporary eye tattoos called Eye Rocks. Instead of painting ones eyes with makeup, one can use water to adhere brightly colored stickers. I haven’t tried mine out yet as I am saving them for a fun occasion which may or may not be on Halloween since I’ll probably just be staying at home watching movies and handing candy out to kids.

SPOILER: One last thing included was a card mentioning a sneak peak about the December box which says that, that box will include their new 15 color pro palette which retails for a whopping $99 on their website! They are taking requests for just the December box, but are expecting to sell out quickly.

So if you have a makeup lover in your life you might want to consider signing up for at least the December box which is $15 (+$1.98 shipping) and from my understanding international orders can be accommodated IF you call in. You can Starlooks to reserve your December box at (949) 679-0679. I would be extremely appreciative if you could please mention that you heard about Starbox from Jaclyn at Jaclyn’s Musings.

Earlier this month we were all asked about our skin tone (as it has to do with the November box with my guess being one of the foundations on their site) and what month our birthdays fall into so that they can send a special surprise during that month. I haven’t heard of all other subscription service doing the same. I am so very much hoping that the amazing December box will be customized based on our color preferences. I can definitely think of a couple people who would love to receive their December box for the holidays and love that Starlooks is offering the option to purchase just the December box for just this purpose.

I’d love to hear if you’ve tried Starbox or any of Starlooks’ products? Or if you’ve tried any other subscription service and what you think of them?
